i've heard a couple of different schemes for calculating a cat's age....what have you heard, and does it seem to fit your cat?
my guy's going to be 10 in human years....he's taken a hankering to sleeping in front of a heater this winter in the evenings...a new thing (i guess he's middle aged?)
also....where did you hear the scheme? (i heard the one i use from someone i knew, which was: 12 years for the first year, and 4 years for every year after that of human years)

Re: so...how old is your cat in cat years?
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 3:57 AMI usually just look at the chart in the vet's office while I'm waiting. My boys are 5, 14 and 19 in human years. The chart doesn't even go up to 19! The vet said there's been a huge increase in life expectancies in recent times. Between keeping them inside, safe from cars and predators and disease, improvements in our knowledge of nutrition and quality of food, plus advances and use of veterinary care, we're keeping them around for a long time.
My oldest boy is such a kicker. He's got a limp from being hit by a car when he was very young and I didn't yet appreciate the idea of indoor cats. He has some issues with climbing stairs or getting up on my bed, but he just goes. The next oldest keeps trying to test him to take over as dominant cat, but old 'Dito just kicks his butt. Every so often I have WCW - world cat wrestling, live entertainment in my living room!
Oh, and 'Dito's only medical issue is really about the limp. I give him Hip Action, treats with glucosamine and condroitin and they make a huge difference. Other than that, he's just fine.

Wed, February 6, 2008 - 7:44 PMdo you get hip action from the vet, or is it something that is sold in the pet dept. of stores? -

Thu, February 7, 2008 - 5:59 AMThe only place I've found Hip Action is actually a doggie bakery. I checked Petsmart and the bigger places, but no one carries it... even though the Hip Action website says they are supposed to have it. It's made by Zuke's and you can get in on their website, too.
My vet gave me glucosamine/chondroitin tablets that she swore cats loved. Yeah, right. They were superexpensive and my cat wouldn't go anywhere near them. The Hip Action is a fish-flavored treat. My boy is so into them that when he hears me open the bag, he'll start clawing at my hands if I can't get them out fast enough!

Thu, February 7, 2008 - 8:22 PMkewl tips for finding hip action...
as for cats sleeping by the heater....my guy for the first time has started sleeping by the portable heater (it's one of those enclosed oil heated things that doesn't make any noise, doesn't make dust, has a thermostat, the whole deal) this winter. despite the fact that no matter how cold it is, he must have his breakfast outdoors in the morning! cat logic, go figure.
anyway, he does enjoy his heat.
i remember my mom used to put a towel in the dryer and warm it up for her cat to sleep on....maybe an alternative for the territorial cat wars around the wood stove?

Re: so...how old is your cat in cat years?
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 3:16 PMMy Alaric is going to be 18 this year. It doesn't seem possible. Over the last few months, he seems to have slowed down a bit, but only a bit. And it may be that it's because it's cold in here in the winter. (We have a wood stove in the living room, and that's the heat) I'm saving up to get a "kitty warmer" for next winter. Morgan (who is 12) is the alpha cat, and she sleeps UNDER the wood stove. The boys are not allowed to be on the tiled area around the wood stove, though they CAN sleep on the carpet near it, if Morgan's in a good mood. But I'm thinking it may not be enough for Alaric these days.

Re: so...how old is your cat in cat years?
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 6:42 AMMy boy is a couple months shy of 10. This winter he has taken a liking to the big heat grate in the dining room floor at night instead of with me. He seems a little less likely to climb the stairs, maybe going up and down 4 times a day instead of 12. He still comes up stairs for my morning nap (I work an odd schedule, and the cats have to wake me up to feed them in the mornings, I read a bit, then back to bed), to sleep either on my legs or under the covers on my chest. When we get out the laser pointer or remote control car to play with the cats, he won't jump up on the furniture, but still zips back and forth from room to room as fast as he can. He still climbs up the big homemade cat tree at least once a day (5 feet straight up of sisal rope wrapped around 6 in. pvc pipe, then another foot of burlap around a 2x4). I'm not certain that 100% of his heat-seeking behavior is due to age - as he is part Siamese, spent the first 7 years of his life in Arizona then moved to Minnesota.
The girl cat is 6. When the two of them are napping together, she often wraps herself around him, and maintains the alert, like she is letting him get rest while she keeps watch. This is a role reversal, as he raised her, and often guarded for her when she was younger. She climbs the big cat tree several times a day. Climbing is really her thing, though. Not only will she climb up, but she can also turn around and climb down. -

Re: so...how old is your cat in cat years?
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 1:53 PMMy theory is that cats are such efficient animals that they will gladly steal any available heat, rather than waste the energy of creating their own. I just look at how my cats snuggle in bed with me when it gets chilly. They just crawl all over and try to steal my body heat.
And a funny story about heaters.... My mother had a kerosene heater. Our little Chablis was so in love with the heat that she actually jumped up on the burner on top! Of course, she jumped right off again. My mom sat there with cold compresses and worried and worried. The next morning. The cat was absolutely fine.
