cats are so weird

topic posted Sat, May 3, 2008 - 4:54 AM by  offlineHeather
I have one little boy, Shadow, who was a rescued stray who has never quite adjusted to humanfolk. He occasionally deigns to allow me to pet him, but usually he runs when I come anywhere near him. I have never managed to get him to the vet. I had to cancel three appointments because I can't get him in the carrier and usually get myself quite shredded in the attempt. (Yes, I've tried leaving it around the house, putting treats and catnip inside, but he's terrified.) If I'm hanging out watching television with the other two boys curled up with me, he will sometimes, rarely, sit on the very edge, as far from me as possible. He has already jumped up onto the bed, a king-size, mind you, and he sees me and runs.

Lately, I've noticed that after I get out of bed, he's usually curled up on my pillow, right in the space where I usually sleep. What's up with that? It's so funny because if I even approach he gets scared, but he chooses to nap where I sleep, as long as I'm not there, of course.

i have a little one too.
first and foremost life seeks health
and what most learned and taught counter reality
milk? it is not even good for humans, so do not give it to kittens
    unless raw of course
and his diet probably needs to be changed
    wish i had more time
caught your post in sign off
    be back...

I was just talking about his strange behavior. There is nothing wrong with his size or health. His diet is fine. I have three cats. The two "big" cats are my old boys and weigh around 18-20 lbs each. The "little" is a relative term. I'd guess he's around 12-14 lbs, but can't be sure without being able to hold him to get an accurate weight. And the other two aren't fat either. They are just big cats. I get them to the vet regularly and she said they are normal for their size, no special diets or anything recommended. And judging by the chart at the vet's office when you look down on them from above to see if their belly sticks out or pulls in, all three seem fine to me.

Everything is relative, of course. I refer to the old boys because the oldest will be 20 years old this August and the other is 15. The little guy is only 7.

my bela, who came to me an adult, had love in his eyes from the get-go, climbs onto my belly for a nap while i'm laying down, but when i'd go to pick him up for a cuddle, he'd turn into the tazmanian devil...this went on for 5 years. this last month, finally, its cuddles in my arms time, for about 30 secs, then he starts to tense, so i put him down, i try it about once a week, and he's getting better, stays relaxed longer, is beginning to enjoy it .. 5 years!! i think our poor dears who began life on the streets have memories of awful things being done to them, and no matter how much they want to love and trust us, we are so big to their littleness, survival instinct cuts in. Slowly but surely shadow will come around. he wants to, i'm sure.

he's gorgeous and loves you. but he's just still wild so can' let himself have anymore than laying where you were , being near the scent and energy, but not actually touching yet. i'd give him lots of time--he looks very special and worth it. even if he never gets any closer, just having him around in any capacity would be a gift.

Hi Heather, I think I would agree with Ellie, he wants to feel connected but is afarid.
This may have nothing to do with you. I have two wild cats that are slowly becoming use to me.
It took two years to pick them up. One will even stand on my lap for a short time.
I will never know the whys of what they think or do.
          Cute cat.

Oh, I agree. Even when he allows me to pet him, I can sense his fear. He wants to run and can only resist for so long. It's already been five years that he's lived with me. I kinda got stuck with him when my mother moved. On movind day, we got all the other cats into carriers, but couldn't catch Shadow. She moved 50 miles away. I had to go to the house and feed him and one finally spent about four hours with cat nip and lured him into the box. While I had him in my car, he was thrashing about and I was worried he would hurt himself. So, rather than drive all the way to Mom's, I brought him to my house. Now, I'm stuck with him because I can't get him in a carrier again. I keep hoping he'll get beyond the fear, but I don't think it will ever really go away.

Indeed. Capt. Jack likes licking strawberries. He doesn't bite them to eat them he just rasps them to pulp and eats them that way.

One of my black half-Siamese cats will fight to get lettuce leaves, baby bok choy, and mushrooms. She comes running when I make salad or stir fry. She'll snatch these vegetables right out of my hand and slink away with them, growling, as if she were carrying a mouse. And she'll eat these things, too, or mostly. Cats are deeply weird.

i wonder if it has to do with smell...

my guy will wait for me to vacate a chair porch so that HE can sit on it.

he likes to sit wherever i've been sitting.

if i go out of town, i leave something of mine with my smell on it on the bed for him to sleep on if he wants.

it's either a smell thing, or some weird vibratory proximity thing....they are weird!

They do have a greater sense of smell than we do and I have been taught that they like to smell their person when we're not around. Years ago, my oldest boy was hit by a car. It was a nightmare at the time, but he's 20 yrs old now and doing fine. His limp only becomes noticeable when there are good treats around. "Look at me, I'm a gimp, please give me some goodies." But anyway, when it happened, someone amazingly took him to my own vet. Considering they were tourists from out of town, it's a great coincidence. And, honestly, I think any other vet would have just put him down. I'm so glad they took him to Dr. Jimmy. He was in pretty bad shape and Dr. Jimmy, who was not only our vet, but a personal friend, didn't even recognize him. It wasn't until he noticed the tag on the collar with the rabies vaccine info that he looked it up and called me. The poor guy had a collapsed lung and Jimmy didn't want to operate because of the risk of the anesthesia so he "invented" a soft cast to set the shoulder for him.

      Anway, I'm rambling, as usual.

The point I wanted to make was that the vet told me to put a towel in my bed and sleep with it and bring it in the next day for them to put in his cage while he was healing, to make him feel more at home and comfortable. He was also fantastic about letting me sit there and pet him whiile he was in the hospital until I could take him home. I was working twelve hour days, but I still came every day to see him.
