Why do cats cuddle?

topic posted Thu, August 25, 2005 - 6:20 PM by  Unsubscribed
I often wonder this, in the hot summer months, when my cat insists on sleeping cuddled up against me. In the winter time I just figure that I like a big heater to them. But in the summer, it doesn't make sense to cuddle unless they actually LIKE it.
My cat likes his paws held too, when we sleep. We actually spoon, he lays his head on my shoulder, back to me, and I reach around and hold both his paws in my hand. He loves it!

Cats are by nature loners, right? So why on earth do certain cats love to cuddle?

Well, my cats love to be cuddled also, both each other and and me. Lions do live in small communities, although jaguars and cheetahs tend to be yer guess is as good as mine. It may just be how they are raised--cats who are raised in an extremely affectionate environment like to be held/cuddle all the time, where as some cats are just super independant.

I know that before I got my Bear, Monster wasn't very affectionate at all. Now, however, he can be almost as affectionate as Bear (although not for as long). If I'm around, he's usually in touch, even if its just a paw or tail.

    empress z,

i read that their body temperatures go down when they sleep so they find a warm spot. i wondered about this too in the summer. my pepper girl spoons with me during after lunch nappies in the heat of the day!!! (she doesn't let me hold her paws all the time though). and, she sleeps with me at night that way. it's adorable.

Raja hates being held, but loves to cuddle too! and she'll always stretch out her paws to touch me. It's so hard when you're laying in bed like that - cause you just don't want to get up and endure the hardships of work... you just want to feel the love... awwww.... I miss my Raja and I've only been at work for a couple of hours...

My oldest cat Gizzy spoons too! He has this bedtime ritual of prancing around in circles while I pet him then he flops down next to me and I have to hold his back feet or he gets mad and we have to do the whole thing over again. If I get up in the night he gets up with me, and we have to do it all over again when we go back to bed. He has been doing this for 13 years now. I don't know how I will sleep when he's gone.

Maybe that is what is wrong with Shelby and I’s sleeping situation. She prances and kneads and prances and kneads, but she won’t just lay still! She finally sleeps at my feet. Anytime I try to snuggle with her she has to get up and wonder around my head again. Maybe I’m just doing something wrong. I rescued her from a shelter – perhaps I just don’t know what ritual it is that she is expecting! A year later and I still don’t know.

why do they do that circling thing? it seems pretty senseless to us but i'm sure they have their reasons.

when I go to bed, Tuxedo has to crawl under the covers, turn around, then stretch out against me with his head on my pillow... it's our nightly ritual... and when he gets too hot, he crawls out & sleeps at the foot of the bed near sweetie's feet...

Azrael is more skittish & refuses to be held most of the time... but she'll curl up on the opposite corner near MY feet eventually...

whenever I've been really really sad or depressed, my cats become my "cry pillows" and I've soaked fur often enough... somehow they just "know" what I need... ::smile::

my kitties love to snugle, and I love snugling with them, too!
I think the worst part about leaving for the weekedn or something, is not being able to cuddle with them.

I had never had cats before I got my kitties almost 7 years ago, and my friend who grew up cats all her life told me to pick them up a lot when they where little, and to kiss them and cuddle with them as much as I could, and I did. I think this is why my kitties may be so affectionate.

When Bobby was like 2-4 months old, he would 'roll up' on my shoulder and he'd stay there while I'd read, talk on the phone... watch TV... whatever, just like a little parrot or something. When he got bigger he'd fall evrytime he'd try doing that. he still tries sometimes, though. hehe... it's cute!

I was told that boys cuddle more than girls do. The lioness is the hunter of the group - so that would make sence with boys just hanging about. I would also tend to agree that it has to do with how much you handle them as kittens. But hey - each person is an individual and so is true for animals.
Naven spoons and throws one leg over - it's adorable to watch him get comfortable.

Kizmet cuddles with me when i first come home from being away all day. And he has the most peculiar habit which i have not seen anyone else talk about yet. He loves to lay on my shoulde and snuggle his face in my hair - and once he's drool city!! He loses all sense, purrs like a broken motor, and drools so much that if i let him stay there, he'd probably drown the both of us!! does anyone else have a cat that does that???? it's cute...but very messy!

OMG! Sandra I told you are cats are one and the same! Little Dude has done that since he was a baby. He puts one paw on each shoulder and burrows into my hair, and then watch out! I need a poncho to hold him! Sweetpea (traitorous furball) does it too only he doesn't drool, he licks my neck. I don't know which one's worse.
Little Dude will also try to be sneaky at night and climb on my pillow behind me to "shower" me with his love. He just hasn't realized that a 16 pound tub of vibrating fur is hard pressed to be sneaky.
BTW, my mom's cat does it too.

hahah, i think are cats are long lost cousins or something. that is so funny!! i was beginning to think that Kiz was the only one that did that cuz all my friends that i told that to looked at me sideways!! haha, Kiz does the same thing little Dude does, tries to be sneaky. And the look on his face when he realizes that joe and i have been watching him the entire time is priceless!

When Little Dude was actually little my husband Bob thought it was cute. Not so much anymore! He won't let LD up there to drool but he'll pet him and put LD into his "fruity Dudey" mode. Then Bob will go "EWWW he's got a bubble" meaning a big bubble of drool hanging off LD's lips. That's about the time Little Dude shakes his head and splatters everything within a four foot radius.

    I have three boys -

Usually - Each will come into my bed at a different time.. do what they have to do and pick a spot on me to sleep or hold onto.

Some times I get pinned down by all three.. or I get a bodhi in my back.. so I wake up with a sore back or neck. He tends to wedge himself under me when I sleep.. Weirdo!

My oldest boy loves to snuggle. He's like a little clamp on thing. he circles, kneads and plops down. My arm has to be between his legs and rubbin his tummy.

Bodhi.. the middle boy.. like to head butt me and settle down for the night on my pillow.. or by my side. Depends on what he feels like.

The baby boy - little Zareru- he likes to sleep in my armpit. Not sure why. That or he like to sleep on me when I'm on my side.

But he also walks around the bed swishing his tail screaming at me. He's the first one in the bed but the last one to get comfy.

my pepper kitty is the spooner girl. for afternoon naps and at night.

in the winter during afternoon nap pepper will sleep in the crook of my belly and spider kitty in the crook of my knee. fluffy likes to be close as possible -- maybe on the back ledge of the couch.

my medium kitty, senior citizen is not too cuddly or social anymore. but when i go back to "her" room and talk and pet her she does her butt-head thing. she's getting the drool thing going too. i thought it was because of age that they drooled.
