my poor baby, Eddie was diagnosed with Constipation, the vet gave him some medicine to help clear him out, but keeping things running smoothly down the road could be fun. One he hates to be brushed, and I've tried a few hairball remedies, and well he does not like them......so if any one has tips or proven methods to keep a kittys bowels working good I'd love to hear about them!

Re: Constipation
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 9:46 AMI would like to know too. It's good info to have in case it happens to your kitty. my cat had a bad experience a couple years ago with her stomach. of course it was diarrhea (dehydration).

Re: Constipation
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 11:06 AMI Left a stick of butter/margerine out for my cats. The would lick up some of the butter every now and again and it greatly reduced the amount of hair ball troubles they were having. For the most part the hair balls jsut seemed to pass through. It might work for you fellows too.

Re: Constipation
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 12:15 PMI've heard 100% pure pumpkin helps with constipation. I'd look into that and see if it's true.

Re: Constipation
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 5:57 PMI would think it's mainly about the food he's eating. Cats have very fussy systems and if there is too much filler or stuff that cats cannot digest, then that usually causes a problem. In all my conversations with vets over the past years, they are very consistent to say avoid the grains and carbs. Cats need protein and fat and nothing else. All those special "indoor" blends with extra grains are really not healthy for our beloved furry ones. My current vet is also a big opponent of fish and chicken, saying that beef foods are better for them. We discussed this on another thread. I forget the subject. Cat food or something rather obvious, I think.
Of course, there could be other issues - stress, other medical problems, etc. But my gut instinct (no pun intended) tells me this is probably about the tummy and what we put it in it.

Re: Constipation
Sat, March 15, 2008 - 2:47 AMMy colby was rather prone to constipation too- the vet gave him lactulose, which does help, but he was all "pleh!" on it (and whop wants to keep dosing a kitty with meds anyway?). I started mixing some mashed squash/pumpkin into their food, a couple of matchbox-sized cubes each meal. Never had the problem occur again. -

Re: Constipation
Sun, March 16, 2008 - 9:33 PMmy vet recommended indoor hairball cat food.....currently 3 of them get a weight management food, and one is on a a diet for urinary tract. From what the vet said weight management is lower in fat...so that can lead to the hair not passing through as easy. I've read that pumpkin works, I also like the butter idea, and if it was just Eddie I'd try that.........but Vindaloo is a piglet, and I know he would eat the whole stick if it was left out!!
So it seems I'll have to go the route of Eddie getting his own food! But I'll see if he'll eat squash first! I think it's yummy, maybe he will!
Cats......I sure love them but they can be a pain in the butt!
Has any one had success with Hairball stuff? -

Re: Constipation
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 7:46 PMi do use the purina one hairball kibble as one of the three i rotate for my guy (the other two are the urinary tract and the sensitive systems).
i also need to get on that religious nightly combing routine with him....he's shedding already! that definitely helps.

Re: Constipation
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 5:48 AMI usually go back and forth between Purina One's Sensitive Systems and the Hairball Management, sometimes the Urinary formula if they are out of the others. Plus, they get Pounce treats. Plus, my older boy gets Hip Action - a glucosamine and chondroitin treat, which the younger guys ignore. -
