Two of my cats are sick. They sneeze and have runny eyes.
The one that got sick first, Topaz, is starting to get better so I am hopeful for both to recover. Chunker is still quite sick with sad face etc.

Re: Do cats get colds?
Fri, January 11, 2008 - 7:41 PMmy understanding is that the herpes virus in cats manifests as runny eyes and nose. you might want to take them to the vet for a definitive diagnosis. if you've got a holistic vet in your area, they might be able to suggest more alternatives to treatment.
my guy has the kitty herpes virus, it acts up when he's been upset by something. i treat it homeopathically and that seems to work really well for him.

Re: Do cats get colds?
Fri, January 11, 2008 - 11:10 PMWhen your cat has cold-like symtoms, it is an excellent idea to take kitty to the veterinarian - or at least call them. My vets have always been great about helping me to figure out which symptoms are urgent or when to watch-and-wait for further symptoms. Sometimes those kitty-colds are bacterial upper-respiratory infections that can quickly turn to pneumonia, so it is definitely something to monitor carefully.

Re: Do cats get colds?
Sat, January 12, 2008 - 5:19 AMI would definitely talk to a vet. Especially with two of them getting sick, they could give it back and forth and have trouble getting totally rid of it. And most especially if they are lethargic or not eating. Those are the two biggies that mean "get help now."

Re: Do cats get colds?
Sat, January 12, 2008 - 9:55 AMi find that beastly gets sneezy and a bit lethargic when we are very ill with a flue, like right now, but it rarely happens in our household.
i do belive, contrary to popular belief, that human colds and flues can be passed to our fur babies too!
beastly seems to recover from these quickly, but if it goes on for more then a few days i'd say it's vet time. -

Re: Do cats get colds?
Sun, January 13, 2008 - 2:40 AMIn our family of kitties we find that each cat has its own unique constitution. Most of my cats throughout my life have been very resistent to most illness. Rarely do any of my cats get any colds l and I don't know if I have ever experienced a runny nose bothering my cats. On the other hand they do seem to have a bit of conjunctivitis of the eye at times.
The exception is my Siamese male. He has excess build up in his ears and they have to be swabbed out regularly. Also if he gets stressed sometimes he has gotten a bit of a sneezy time and feverish. This is rare but has happened and treatment involves taking him to the vet and using pain killers. Not fun for my meezer. -

Siamese toms do tend to be a bit physically fragile when it comes to their little immune systems, My poor Bob has suffered from asthma for years, and the meds for that made him diabetic until I stopped giviing him the shots.
I'm trying to find him an acupuncturist I can afford.

Re: Do cats get colds?
Sun, January 13, 2008 - 5:11 AMWhen I adopted Abby from the shelter, after about 2 days, she had a runny eye and lots of sneezing. I took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (which is pretty rampant in shelters). I got eye drops and Amoxcillin. She was fine after about a week. But they did say you should get them on antibiotics since they can't kick colds like we do. -

Tue, January 15, 2008 - 7:55 AMThanks for all your posts and encouragements.
Both of my cats are mostly well now.
Chunker had a little drip from his mouth this morning but clear clean eyes.
It is good to see them running around again.

Re: Do cats get colds?
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 4:19 PMMy oldest cat gets a cold every jan. He gets over it in a week normally, anything longer than that, I take him in. I did once, and my vet just said he has a cold. Nothing he could do. Bodhi just sleeps never the heater. He's looking better this week rather than last week. He's bouncing around more now :)
